Always learning
Always learning
On my behalf, and that of Pearly, Tessie, and Gus, you are welcome to this space. I hope that in this place, you may find something meaningful that will add some small thing of value to your own life.
Pax et bonum!
My name is Phil Daley. I am the oldest of five children. I love my life. I love my family and friends. I love my dogs; I have three. I’m a trained singer; I love music. I’m a foodie; I love cooking … I especially love sharing things I create in the kitchen with my family and my friends.
I’m a retired Roman Catholic priest; I love signs and symbols. I think that metaphors are the keys to an intimate understanding of life. I have graduate and post-graduate degrees in Philosophy and Theology. If I have learned anything of value, it’s that I will always be learning; there is no end to it. Naturally, then, I love reading! I read anything as long as it’s thoughtful and thought provoking and teaches me something new.
I’ve been a software designer and programmer; I founded and ran a successful commercial software development company for seventeen years with a group of friends and colleagues .
I love math, science, and technology. I love stargazing with my Celestron telescope. I love photographing the life that is around me and exercising my creative muscles with my camera. And I love working my other muscles with my ERG rowing machine and long fast-walks with my fast dogs.
But one of my greatest loves has been and always be philosophy … I love discovering meaningfulness; pockets of it are scattered everywhere. I have discovered that when I am quiet, observant, and patient, grace and goodness reveal themselves right before my eyes. And lo! They were always there!
I sing! I’ve studied voice for over 30 years. I’ve performed in recitals, chamber choir and theatre. It seems that I have always been a musician. I love performing!
I take in dogs that have been hurt by human cruelty. I herd sheep and goats with my dogs so that they can become what they were meant to be and to strengthen the bond between us. What they give me is the revelation of what I am meant to be; a profound sense of being human … which is to be curious, searching, learning, and capable of reaching beyond my limitations toward something much vaster than me.
Yet all the while , my dogs keep me grounded in in the immediate, I am always learning to accept that I am unable to perpetuate my own existence. Like my dogs, I am mortal! My very being is contingent upon things beyond me and my control. So the “Now” is a gift that must never be squandered, My dogs remind me of this everyday.
Retirement is an ending to many things that seemed so critical and vitally important for what was a fleeting few decades. However, I am discovering that saying thanks and goodbye to all of that suddenly presents a whole world of possibilities. It‘s new! It’s exciting! It calls for some courage. It calls for some honesty. It calls for some virtue. It even calls for more holiness. But it promises more in return than I could ever give. So I want to continue exploring to discover what new things are just around the corner,
